Grand Canyon Backpacking

Challenge yourself backpacking 29 miles through one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. Elevation will range from 6,400 ft on top of the South Rim to 2,200 ft along the Colorado River. Participants will carry a full backpack with personal and group gear, and travel along difficult and remote terrain. This trip includes five days and four nights in the canyon with a rest day at the bottom to enjoy the magnificent Colorado River, and two nights stay in hotel before and after trip.

Trip Itinerary

Sunday, February 24:Arrive at Phoenix airport by 1 p.m. Drive 4 hours to hotel in Grand Canyon Village. Walk around town, dinner out; possibly watch the National Geographic’s Grand Canyon movie at Omni Max theatre. Sleep in hotel.         

Monday, February 25: 6am wake-up call, drive to Hermits Rest Trailhead and start hiking down the canyon on Hermit Trail by 8:00am. This first day the group descends 6,400ft over 8.2miles from the rim down to our camp along Hermit Creek. This is the only night on trial that we will have a pit toilet and be in a designated camping area. This day will be long and strenuous.

Tuesday, February 26: Day two we continue our decent as we hike out of the Hermit Creek drainage and up to the Tonto Trail. We will follow the canyon contours for 5 miles along the Tonto Trail enjoying breathtaking views and sweeping canyon panoramas. At the end of our day we will follow the Boucher Trail down to Boucher Creek and set up camp. We will stay here for 2 nights.

Wednesday, February 27: Rest day! Spend the day relaxing beside the Colorado River and exploring the inner canyon. Read a book, practice photography skills, and write a letter, or practice yoga, it is your call. (Swimming will not be an option due to the cold, fast moving water and large Boucher Rapids). To get to the Colorado River the group will day hike 1.5miles down a slot canyon and 1.5miles back to camp at the end of the day.

Thursday, February 28: Day 4 we begin our ascent back towards the rim. We will hike out of Boucher Canyon and continue up to Yuma Point on the Boucher Trail. The trail will be extremely strenuous and push your comfort level as we travel along narrow trail with steep drop offs at cliffs edge. We will ascend 2,000+ feet and travel 4miles. Yuma Point is one of the most spectacular view points in the entire canyon and a fitting location for our last night camped out under the stars.

Friday, March 1: Break camp early and begin hiking out. We will hike 5.2 miles and climb another 2,000ft from camp back up to the Hermit Trailhead. This day will be long and strenuous and leave you feeling extremely accomplished and exhausted. Drive 4 hours to hotel near Phoenix airport. Enjoy a warm shower and hot tub back at the hotel before a dinner out.

Saturday, March 2: Travel home, or extend your trip to Las Vegas or another fun city.

You must be able to carry 40 pounds on your back while hiking up to 9 miles a day with significant elevation change. This is not a trip for a person with a fear of heights or exposure.
